I was reading posts on my old blog and came across this entry that I’d made a couple of years ago and I thought the sentiments still held and the timing was right what with National Day being today, so I’m reposting it here.
The radio was playing old national day songs like “Stand up for Singapore” and “Count on me Singapore” and it nearly made me cry. Why? Because throughout the years, it seems that we Singaporeans have lost the plot. We keep asking “Why is the government not doing this?”, “Why is the government not treating us better?”, etc, but we also kind of forgot about doing our part.
John F Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”
What have we Singaporeans done for our country? We are increasingly becoming a xenophobic people who do nothing but criticise and blame the government for every single thing.
What has happened to:
“Count on me Singapore, count on me to give my best and more
You and me, we’ll do our part, stand together, heart to heart
We’re going to show the world what Singapore can be”
Isn’t it time for us to do OUR part? Not just waiting for the government to try to fix everything?
