Nonomiya Shrine: A Word A Week Challenge – Red

IMG_4974

Red is associated with Japanese Buddhism and Shintoism, and in many shrines in Japan, red will be the dominating colour. Nonomiya Shrine is located in Arashiyama, Kyoto and is the place where many imperial princesses during the Heinan period spent a year in order to purify themselves before going to the Ise Shrine.

In this picture, I love how the young students in their dark coloured uniforms stand in contrast to the young priestess in her vermilion skirt.
